PRE-SALT RESERVOIRS DEMAND ADVANCED PETROGRAPHIC
CHARACTERIZATION
The recent
discoveries of giant, early Cretaceous, sub-salt oil and gas accumulations
in the deep and ultra-deep areas of the eastern marginal basins of
Brazil, have brought petrographic studies to the center
arena. The sub-salt reservoirs are very complex and intensely affected by
diagenetic processes, and their genetic conditions and relationships with
facies and primary compositional controls are yet to be understood (see
images on the right side). Systematic studies considering petrologic,
geochemical and stratigraphic evidence will have to be performed for the
construction of effective models for reservoir quality prediction and
development. In these studies, systematic petrographic characterization
with advanced tools such as PETROLEDGE® will be of key importance. PETROBRAS has elected PETROLEDGE® as its
corporate software for reservoir petrographic characterization, and the
system is presently in use in all the Company's labs for the description
of clastic reservoirs and associated rocks. Present developments
in the system are enhancing its functionality
for the description of unconventional reservoirs, such as those of the pre-salt
section.
