Since 1957, UFRGS Institute of Geosciences has developed advanced research and teaching activities in several areas of the Earth Sciences. Presently, three undergraduate courses are offered: Geology, Geography and Cartographic Engineering. Eighty-six permanent Faculty members, plus associate and visiting researchers, are installed in a modern campus with about 12,000 m2 of built area, including a large library, a modern auditorium, well-equipped laboratories, and classrooms.

Since 1968, 495 Master´s and 208 Ph.D. degrees were completed in the Graduate Course in Geosciences, comprising four areas of concentration: Geochemistry, Marine Geology, Paleontology and Stratigraphy, the latter developed in cooperation with PETROBRAS. An agreement with Brazil National Petroleum Agency – ANP allows the formation of specialists in Petroleum Geology in accordance to the new scenario of petroleum exploration in the country.

Scalable Illustrative & Science Visualization Group

The University of Calgary is a leading research and teaching institution with a strong international reputation. It is built on a high-quality faculty leading on both research and teaching endeavors. It offers an environment promoting cutting-edge research, providing first-rate equipment and facilities. The Department of Computer Science has 43 full-time faculty members. Research in the department is mainly clustered in the following five focus areas: (1) Evolutionary Software Engineering, (2) Foundations of Computer Science, (3) Networks and Distributed Systems, (4) Security and Information Management and (5) Visual and Interactive Computing. Each focus area includes several research groups. The Visual and Interactive Computing (VIC) area addresses the boundaries between humans, computers, and real and artificial worlds: what people see and how they interact with what they see. Effective research in VIC integrates many areas of Computer Science: Computer Graphics, Scientific and Information Visualization, Human Computer Interaction, Ubiquitous and Tangible Computing, Computer Vision, Scientific Computing and Software Engineering. The interplay between the various specialized groups within VIC adds cross-discipline richness to its research. VIC research is naturally collaborative, and includes many combined projects within the Department of Computer Science groups as well as external collaborations with other departments and disciplines. The Scalable Illustrative & Science Visualization Group group is part of Dr. Costa Sousa's Research program in Scalable Reservoir Visualization at the University of Calgary, primarily funded by the Computer Modeling Group Reservoir Simulation Foundation (Foundation CMG).
